Armed Services YMCA of Missouri Duck Race will be held on Saturday, July 28th, in conjunction with Old Settler’s Day. Festivities are held in the Waynesville City Park and begin at 10:00 AM. Angel Award 2011 presented to Tom Bright

Tom has been an active volunteer for the ASYMCA for the past 5 years. He is called upon to be the photographer at all events, including Fabulous Fakes, the Duck Race and Hail to Heroes. He drives the Y bus for all Warriors in Town events and provides the shuttle service for Christmas on the Square. He attends every ASY event and is often one of the last to leave. He never objects to folding flyers, stuffing envelopes, running errands, or even providing dinner for visiting YMCA guests. He is truly a selfless volunteer and we are very proud to have him as a part of the Y team.

Armed Services YMCA wins Raytheon Award

Armed Services YMCA of Missouri receives Raytheon Award for
“YMCA C.A.R.E.S” program

The Armed Services YMCA of Missouri received national recognition by winning the Raytheon Award for the “Best New Program”, during the ASYMCA National Board Meeting held in Alexandria, VA. This is the second time the Missouri branch has won this award in the last three years.

The program, YMCA C.A.R.E.S, Creative Activities to Reinforce Early Skills, is designed to help children, age birth through 48 months, develop the skills necessary to successfully enter school. Targeting the twenty percent of preschoolers not participating in a structured child care environment, the program is focused on family, friend and neighbor caregivers who regularly watch infants and preschoolers during the day. It provides these caregivers with an increased understanding of the role of play in the development of school readiness, increases knowledge of child development, provides a supportive social network for caregivers, increases understanding of the importance of their role and provides activities that support pre-literacy. The children have the opportunity to improve their social and emotional development, pre-literacy development and physical and motor development.

The program is conducted in 6 week sessions and there is NO COST to the participants. Our facilitator for the program is Ms. Cathy Gates, a certified Early Learning educator. Snacks are provided.

Vicki Whites is ASYMCA Angel Award winner for 2011

Vicki has served with the Armed Services YMCA of Missouri since 2009 as an Advisor, and has recently become a Board Member. She currently holds the office of Secretary. For the past two years, she has given generously of her time and talents at all of our programs and special events. She is especially appreciated for her dedication to our Operation Kid Comfort program. She has personally made six quilts that have been presented to military families in the past year. We are happy to present the Angel Award for 2010 to Vicki. Thank you for all you do for the Y.
